A winter extended family photo shoot amongst the pine trees in Wendover Woods was the perfect memory making for this family over Christmas.
As a rule I don’t usually do family photo shoots during the winter. The weather is unpredictable and even if it is dry, children can get cold and understandably a bit grumpy, especially younger ones. However, when I was contacted by a lady in New Zealand about a shoot I couldn’t say no. She was from England, but had married a Kiwi and they now live there. They were going to be visiting with her family over Christmas (including 2 daughters, one of whom was just a baby and it was her first time in the UK) and wanted a photo shoot with her sisters family and the grandparents.
My own brother and my niece live in New Zealand so this was a shoot I just couldn’t say no to as I know how precious these visits can be. I’ve even had a photo shoot myself with my family for this very reason when my brother visited a few years ago.
So of course I agreed to capture memories for this family during the holidays. The trickiest bit was the location as most of my usual locations are a bit bare over winter. I know a spot in Wendover Woods though with the perfect evergreen Christmas tree backdrops. It’s a little bit tricky to access, but this family were game and so was I!
We met between Christmas and New Year – the grandparents, two daughters with their partners and 4 grandchildren. I always use lots of prompts to keep the children engaged – swinging and running, which also helped keep them warm! There were shoulder rides and pine cone collecting amongst it all too. We had a lovely time and they were able to reward themselves and perhaps more importantly the kids at the cafe afterwards!
I’m so pleased with the final photos, and they bought their whole gallery so I think they liked them too! I love that they’ll have these photos of them all together to look back on in years to come.
